Welcome to “SongSessions” and today we have one of the most talented and prolific composers and songwriters ever to wield a Number 2 pencil. He’s had four successful careers - any one of which would have satisfied the childhood dream of any mere mortal. He’s scored feature films like Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation”, “All The President’s Men”, “Saturday Night Fever,” won an Oscar® for Best Song for the inspiring film, “Norma Rae,” won two Grammy™ awards, been nominated for two Tony™ awards and he’s a multiple Emmy™ nominee for his Television work.
He co- wrote the gorgeous top 10 hit song, “With You I’m Born Again” (recorded by Billy Preston and Syreeta) and numerous other Shire songs have been recorded by the likes of Barbra Streisand, Jennifer Warnes, Melissa Manchester (oh yes, and David Pomeranz).
As if that wasn’t enough, David and brilliant lyricist and life-long friend, Richard Maltby Jr., have established themselves as one of the foremost Theater songwriting teams on Broadway.
It is because of the sheer volume of his accomplishments that we’ve decided to split this interview into two parts: Part 1 - “Film Scoring And Songwriting” and Part 2 - “Composing For Musical Theater”.
